Google Ads for tradies on the Mornington Peninsula: a local setup that pays

By Seam Media · Updated

The Mornington Peninsula is a long stretch of towns, from Mount Eliza and Mornington down to Rosebud, Rye and Sorrento, and across to Hastings. Most tradies do not want to drive all of it for every job. Google Ads can put you at the top of the page for the towns and jobs you choose, but only if the account is set up for the peninsula rather than for all of Melbourne.

This guide covers a practical local setup, using Google's own guidance.

Target the towns you will travel to

Set your location targeting to the towns or a radius you are genuinely happy to cover. If a job in Sorrento is not worth the drive from Mornington, leave it out, or put it in a separate campaign with a lower budget. You can add individual suburbs and postcodes, or a radius around your base.

Google lets you target people who are in or regularly in your locations, or people who have shown interest in them. For local trade work, the presence option usually avoids paying for clicks from people elsewhere who are reading about the peninsula, such as someone in another state researching a holiday house.

  • Towns or radius you actually service.
  • Presence: people in or regularly in your locations.
  • Far towns in their own campaign, if at all.

Split campaigns by job

Urgent jobs and planned jobs behave differently. A burst pipe or power outage needs an ad that runs whenever you can answer the phone. A deck, fence or bathroom renovation can run during the hours people plan projects. Separate campaigns or ad groups let you set budgets and bids by what each job is worth.

Write ad text that matches each job and mentions the area, such as servicing Mornington and Mount Martha, so local searchers see you are close.

Set budgets by what each job is worth to you. A switchboard upgrade, a full bathroom or a new fence is worth far more than a small repair, so it can justify a higher cost per enquiry. Bidding the same for every job usually means paying too much for small work and too little for the jobs you want.

Run ads when you can answer

By default, ads can run all day. An ad schedule lets you show ads only when someone can pick up or return calls quickly. A call that goes to voicemail while you are on a roof in Dromana is a paid click that often goes to the next tradie.

The peninsula is also seasonal in places. Southern towns get busier over summer and holiday periods, so check your results by month and adjust budgets and towns when demand changes, rather than leaving the account on the same settings all year.

Choose keywords and block waste

Start with phrase and exact match keywords built around the job and the area, such as a service plus Mornington or Mornington Peninsula. Google says broad match is the default and reaches the widest range of related searches; it works best once conversion tracking is reliable and Smart Bidding has data.

Add negative keywords for searches that will never be paid work: jobs, apprenticeships, courses, wages, DIY and parts. Negative keywords do not match close variants, so add plurals and similar forms. Then read the search terms report weekly at first to see what people actually searched.

  • Phrase and exact match on main jobs and towns.
  • Negatives for jobs, courses, DIY and parts.
  • Search terms reviewed weekly at first.

Land people on a local page

Send each campaign to a page about that job, with your phone number at the top, the towns you cover, photos of your own work and a short quote form. If the ad says Mornington and the page never mentions the peninsula, people leave.

Ads work best alongside a strong Google Business Profile and website, because many people check reviews and the map before calling. Paid and organic visibility support each other.

Track calls and forms

Count calls from ads with a minimum call length and completed quote forms as conversions, not taps on a phone number. Then compare cost per enquiry by job and town and move budget to what pays.
