Local SEO costs in Australia: compare the scope before the price

By Seam Media · Updated

The useful question is what a local SEO budget will change for your business. Two proposals can have similar prices while covering very different work: a Business Profile update, a technical website repair and an original service-page project are different deliverables.

This guide gives you a way to compare scope, ask for evidence and decide what should come first. The prices below are Seam Media's current weekly packages, checked on 6 October 2026. They are not a claim about an Australian industry average, and local SEO is one part of the broader Growth packages.

Define the service and customer before choosing a budget

Choose the service you want more enquiries for, the area you can reliably cover and the type of customer you can serve profitably. A business with one location and a short list of services has a different starting point from a multi-location business or a large ecommerce website.

For example, a fencing business may want installation quotes within a defined radius, while a clinic may want bookings for a specific appointment type. Those goals need different page information and different ways to qualify a visit. A large collection of suburb pages does not establish that either journey works.

  • Name the priority service and real service area.
  • Record the important existing pages and enquiries.
  • List the access, business information and approved examples available.

Ask what will actually be delivered

A proposal should tell you which website or profile changes will be made, how the first priorities are chosen and how often work is reviewed. Distinguish maintaining an existing page from researching and producing a new guide, designing a landing page or repairing a complex website issue.

Seam Media's Growth and Complete Growth packages include five tracked search terms and one prioritised website or SEO improvement monthly. A daily content programme is a larger content scope. It should be planned and priced separately rather than inferred from the word SEO in a package card.

  • Which pages or profile fields will change first?
  • How many improvements or pieces of content are included?
  • Who supplies the facts, photos and project examples?
  • What is excluded, and how is extra work approved?

Separate Maps visibility from website search

Google Business Profile supports discovery in Maps and local results. Website SEO helps Google understand and show your pages in organic search. These are related areas of work, but one report should not combine their actions into an invented customer count.

Google explains that local results are mainly influenced by relevance, distance and prominence. An agency cannot move a customer's search location or guarantee a Maps position everywhere. Ask which searches and locations will be checked and whether the same settings will be used for the comparison.

  • Track the same relevant terms and locations over time.
  • Record profile actions separately from website clicks.
  • Check that business details reflect your real operation.

Check the website foundations before adding volume

Google needs access to the public page, useful content and a clear preferred URL. A sitemap helps discovery, and links from related pages help both visitors and search engines reach it. If a service page is blocked, duplicated or disconnected from the rest of the site, a larger article quota may leave the main problem unresolved.

The first budget may therefore go towards improving an existing service page, fixing a redirect or verifying the enquiry form. Ask why that change matters commercially and how the completed work will be checked. A long audit list by itself is not a completed improvement.

  • Check important pages return successfully and can be indexed.
  • Give each page a clear service purpose and preferred URL.
  • Link new guides to the relevant service page and guide hub.
  • Verify enquiry delivery, not only the success screen.

Include the costs outside management

Advertising spend is separate from agency management. Filming, extra locations, larger website builds, custom integrations, platform fees and substantial content projects may also need a separate quote. Ask for the full scope before comparing the weekly fee with another proposal.

All three Seam Media packages in the table are billed weekly and quoted plus GST. Do not treat a weekly price as a monthly invoice or assume the entire fee is for SEO. The public package page and your agreed proposal should describe the same service boundaries.

  • Confirm GST and the actual billing cadence.
  • Separate agency management from media spend.
  • Ask about builds, filming, extra locations and content scope.
  • Check access and ownership of your website and reporting accounts.

Judge progress with a baseline and useful outcomes

Record the starting impressions, clicks, relevant queries and confirmed enquiries before the work begins. Then compare consistent periods and the same pages. A higher impression count can mean broader visibility while the clicks or enquiry quality remain unchanged.

A 90-day review can assess whether important fixes are live, Google has recrawled the pages, relevant clicks are changing and the enquiries fit your services. It cannot promise a particular position or customer count. Google says crawling can take days to weeks and a crawl request does not guarantee inclusion in search results.

The South East Fencer case study provides an example of source reporting with its limits stated. Read the report period, metric definitions and supporting screenshot before treating any agency case study as evidence for a forecast.

Use these questions to compare a proposal

A useful proposal connects the budget with a defined customer need and a reviewable first step. If the proposed deliverables are unclear, ask for a small, concrete scope before committing to a larger content programme.

  • What is the priority service and which page supports it?
  • What will you change in the first month, and why?
  • What source evidence supports the page content?
  • What is the content allowance and who reviews it?
  • How will you distinguish published, submitted, crawled and indexed?
  • Which report will show useful clicks and real enquiries?
  • What costs sit outside the weekly fee?
